How Does Homeopathy Work?

Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine introduced and developed by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, at the end of the 18th century. Recognizing that the whole person-mind, body, spirit-is affected when there is illness, homeopathy seeks to treat the whole person.

The cornerstone principle of homeopathy is "Let like cure like". It is believed that a substance that can produce disease in a healthy person is used to elicit a healing response in someone presenting a similar disease. For example, a healthy person who takes coffee might have a heightened state of mind and sleeplessness. For a person sick with sleeplessness and anxiety, a homeopath might prescribe a homeopathic remedy that mirrors these symptoms in a healthy person.

Each person shows symptoms of the body, mind, and spirit when they are sick. Some of these symptoms are common to the particular illness, but others are characteristic of the person in their sickness. A homeopath matches the symptom picture of the homeopathic remedy to the symptom picture of the person, with particular attention paid to those symptoms which are unique to the individual.

What Medicines Do Homeopaths Use?

The medicines used in homeopathy are called remedies. They are most commonly made from plants, animal products, and minerals. More than 2,000 substances have been formulated as homeopathic remedies. These substances are extracted and diluted to make a remedy. The more times a substance is diluted, the higher its potency is.

What Conditions Can Be Treated With Homeopathy?

Homeopathy may be effective for a vast array of physical and emotional illnesses. Amongst the most common conditions which people seek homeopathic treatment for are asthma, ear infections, mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, & stress), allergies, arthritis, and high blood pressure.

Homeopathy may also be helpful for those trying conceive or during pregnancy itself. Homeopathic remedies are especially helpful for patients who are sensitive or allergic to conventional medications.

Is Homeopathy Effective With Serious Illness?

Homeopathy can help to heal a person with serious health issues as a complement to orthodox medicine. For example, homeopathy may help a person to improve sleep patterns and appetite, while reducing anxiety and depression, without interfering with other medical treatment. As homeopathic medicine helps to improve the well-being of the whole person, it may also assist to alleviate other health problems and their symptoms.

What Does A Homeopathic Consultation Involve?

Your first consultation will last about 1.5 - 2 hours. During which, your homeopath not only focuses on your chief complaint, but also on your whole being and how you behave within your environment. Here is a small sample of questions which we may ask during consultation.

When did it start?
What was going on in your life at that time?
What foods do you crave or dislike?
How do you sleep? What are your dreams?
What are your fears, stressors and anxieties?
Have you had mental or emotional upheavals?
What makes the chief complaint better or worse?

A homeopath collects these information and looks for patterns within it. From there, we explore aspects that make your illness individual to you. The purpose of collecting all the information and studying it is to find the one homeopathic treatment specifically suited for you at that time. A homeopath may give you a remedy immediately after the consultation, but it could also take a week or so to study all the information before choosing the right treatment for your unique condition.

What Can I Expect From My Homeopathic Treatment?

You may be given a single dose of a homeopathic remedy, or repeated doses of a remedy. Where an illness has developed over a long period of time, several treatments may be necessary over a period of months. Although in acute (short term) conditions such as flu or minor injuries, success with homeopathy could be achieved right away. Recovery takes place in different ways depending on the nature and history of your condition. Generally you will notice an increase in energy and well-being during your recovery.
